Notes
Crosse (1872) recorded that two specimens were collected; originally giving this specimen syntype status. In 1873 (vol. 21) he published a plate illustrating all of the new species from his 1872 paper and for M. thomasi he illustrated the other syntype, which now resides at the NHM (1902.5.28.53). In 1982 Abbott & Dance illustrated the NMW specimen but incorrectly labelled it as a paratype. It was in 1992 that Roland Houart designated the NHM specimen as lectotype and the NMW specimen as paralectotype. Provenance: Associated with this specimen there are labels from J. J. MacAndrew, G. B. Sowerby 3rd and J. R. le B. Tomlin and we know the specimen originated from B. Thomas. It is not clear how or when it passed through these collectors hands. We know that B. Thomas passed several types, mainly Conus, to Tomlin (Smith, 1897) but if it was one of these it doesn’t explain why there are MacAndrew and Sowerby labels present. Most of the J. J. MacAndrew collection is in the NHM (as part of the V. W. MacAndrew collection), but J. J. MacAndrew’s wife did “offer portions of his collection for sale for the benefit of the Red Cross funds” in August 1917 (Melvill, 1919 & Dance, 1966). More investigation is needed.
