Notes
Melvill, 1888 makes reference to Sowerby's illustration in Thesaurus Conchyliorum, pl. 33, figs 387-388 and states that Mr. J. M. Williams possesses Mr Hugh Owen's original specimens (presumably this refers to the specimen(s) used in Sowerby's illustration). Melvill also figures a specimen from the Museum of Owen's College, Manchester stating that Hugh Owen's specimens are "almost as large as the type now figured, pl.ii., f. 15." Interpretation of this information has varied - S. P. Dance has written a label suggesting the Manchester specimen is the holotype, where as Trew, 1987 and McGhie, 2008 have both listed it as a figured syntype. The specimen is certainly that figured by Melvill, but with reference also given to the specimens in H. Owen's original collection and to Sowerby's illustrations it is best to consider them a syntype series, with the specimens figured in Sowerby and Melvill being figured syntypes. The Manchester specimen does not have 'type' written on the label, nor the type locality.
