Collecting details:
MUSSELp database states that there is a holotype specimen in MCZ (MCZ_161893). There is no reference to one unique specimen in the original citation but it does state that the type material is in MCZ. That material must therefore be considered a syntype, rather than holotype. Leeds material has a Hanley label stating 'from Anthony'. A second and third label make reference to the specimens being the only ones ever sent over to Europe, one of these is in Anthony's handwriting. There is no mention of type on these labels, and no reference to the species in Hanley's handwritten catalogue. None of the specimens match the illustration, one other more modern label notes that the specimen was figured but does not state where. As the Leeds material is from the author, and from the type locality, we cannot rule out that they are possible syntypes.

References are listed in chronological order. References containing the "Original Description" or "Type Designation" of Unio opalinus Anthony, 1866 are highlighted in red.
